Sex & Religion

Interesting way to look at things…

Sex, sex, sex!

What happens when high design and the most common human distraction collide? Apparently, design made specifically for pleasure. “Design” certainly seems to be one of the obsessions of the new millennium, and now that we’ve settled comfortably into the 21st century, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that our fixation on design has crossed paths with our fixation on…well, sex. And, perhaps thanks to Sex and the City, it’s suddenly ok to own and even talk about sex toys, its only natural that our studies of design have taken a turn in that direction.

Now, I’m sure when you read “sex toy”, a particular - ahem - shape probably jumps to mind. But that’s exactly where design steps into the mix. Sex toys suddenly don’t look like they should. They’re becoming, dare I say it, artistic. Take, for example, the Tuyo by Big Teaze Toys. Despite the unfortunate naming convention they’ve chosen for the company, the product itself is a drastic step away from the tradition of “personal massagers”. In a similar vein, check out the Sphere by designer Rachel Wingfield. Both are almost innocuous and even perhaps interesting to look at.

Of course, these new developments aren’t limited to toys of a vibrating nature. The “interaction design” of the sexual arena has progressed into slipperier venues as well. Case in point, check out Yours + Mine, a new product from none other than K-Y. Lube that reacts to create a sensation when his and hers (both included) are mixed.

And, of course, I haven’t even touched on the toys for those of you who are digitally minded. Take, for example, those sneaky cats at NotCot who mixed an electric guitar, an OhMiBod vibrator, and a Vox headphone adapter to create the ultimate tool for serenading a loved one.

What will we think of next?
